Politically engaged graphic art
The Musée de l’Imprimerie et de la Communication (Museum of Printing and Communication) is hosting the exhibition-event Avec, by Gérard Paris-Clavel. This major artist, who gives few exhibitions, insists on adding the word ‘event’ after ‘exhibition’. The latter would be too restrictive. Whereas his images – one hundred or so in total – move, live and evolve. They may change and move over the months, while four posters will even make their way around the city, delivering their shock messages. With Gérard Paris-Clavel, art and political activism are inseparable.
Poverty, inequality and injustice in our societies motivate and give meaning to his creative output. With humour and poetry, he points the finger at what should be absurdities. His creations wake up consciences through their simplicity and obviousness.
