Corbas, between earth and sky
To the south-east of Lyon, near the Grandes Terres plateau, Corbas always has its eyes on the sky… it is a town with a reputation for aeronautical activities, boasting an aerodrome, a parachuting school and a museum of aviation.
That said, it also offers plenty of things to do on the ground, including parks, karting, shows and gourmet attractions.
1 - Out and about
The town’s green lung, Corbas leisure park covers 18 hectares (44 acres). Alongside its many tended spaces, playgrounds and sports facilities, there is a vast protected meadow area. Mowing is kept to once or twice a year, allowing wildlife to complete its reproductive cycles. From there, you can see the neighbouring Lyon- Corbas aerodrome, with one of the largest expanses of grassland in the metropolitan area, measuring 100 hectares (247 acres).

2 - In the cockpit
Always dreamed of being a Top Gun pilot? Visit the Musée de l’Aviation, the museum trail looks back at a century of aviation and space travel history. You can even take a seat in the cockpit of a Mirage 2000, or pose next to a Mirage IV (a listed historic monument) or an Alpha Jet of the Patrouille de France. More than a museum, it also serves as a training centre for persons aged 14 upwards to embark on a career in aeronautics.

4 - Countryside walks
On the edge of the Grandes Terres plateau, the Sentier des Moissons is a 3-km route to the north of the town. Accessible to all, it is a gentle, family-friendly walk, offering opportunities to learn about the work of local farmers through information panels dotted along the path. It also leads to the starting point of other walks, such as the Sentier des Alouettes, towards the Fort de Feyzin.

A regionally accredited performance venue, Le Polaris opens its doors to all artforms, with a focus on the arts of speaking. Among the venue’s highlights is the Les Dites Ouïes festival, held on the 22nd of February, dedicated to storytelling for kids and adults alike. On performance evenings, a selection of small home-made dishes is served in the venue.

6 - For food lovers
The Lyon-Corbas wholesale market, nicknamed the ‘stomach of Lyon’, handles some 300,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables each year. You can learn about this mammoth operation during one of the guided tours held on the first Thursday of the month. Taking visitors through the wholesalers’ building and the farmers’ market, the 2½-hour tour ends with a mâchon – the traditional Lyon morning meal.

7 - For your mind
At the same address as Le Polaris, the École municipale d’arts plastiques (EMAP – municipal school of plastic arts) is one of a kind. It offers three-year courses for child and adult learners. Why do we mention it? Because the drawing, painting, engraving and ceramics classes are punctuated with free-to-access conferences. On the 15th of January, the topic will be the hidden side of the dot: a performance-based conference given by Adeline Toulon and Aude Descombes.

8 - Racing fun
Karting is always a lot of fun. Particularly when you have a 500-metre outdoor track with eleven bends and a series of chicanes. With a mixture of fast bends, hairpin turns and straight lines, you will need to stay focussed to pass the finishing line in first place. What’s more, you don’t need to be a driving ace to enjoy this activity.

9 - Tasting experiences
To give your taste buds a treat, make your way to Rue Centrale. At No. 67, you can sample the pastries made by Maison Muller. In January, you’ll find Galette des Rois (Twelfth Night cake) and Babka brioche with almond, hazelnut, black chocolate and gianduja praline. Three numbers down the same street, you’ll find Mediterranean specialities, saucisson in brioche and other Lyon delicacies at one of the oldest butcher shops in Corbas: Les Saveurs de Saint-Ex.

10 - Eating out

Here, as in Gerland, the meat is cut up on-site to provide optimum taste. Foie gras, terrine, steak tartare, extra-large steaks, sirloin steaks, pork ribs, hanger steaks, andouillette (chitterling sausages), pot-au-feu (beef stew), and more… The perfect address for meat lovers!
