Out and about My week-end à la lyonnaise

A winter in Part-Dieu

Published on 25/11/2024

Part-Dieu may have a reputation as a business district, but there’s more to it than that! Forget everything you thought you knew about this fast-changing part of the city and enjoy the many great addresses to be found there.

Food shopping at an indoor market

What better way to start the day than a little gastronomy? Make your way to Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse, a true local institution that brings together more than fifty gourmet food shops and restaurants.
We recommend starting at Le Fer à Cheval for a cup of coffee before browsing the aisles for quenelles (Lyon’s famous dumplings), cheeses and seafood sold by food artisans like Giraudet, Cellerier and Jocteur.

Thrilling puzzles

Now for something completely different: Enigmatic – Live Escape Game. There are seven storylines to choose from, for players of all ages, but beware: a few rooms will take you into horrific settings like a prison, a psychiatric hospital and a haunted circus. These are definitely for adults only.

For younger players or sensitive souls, one of the pirate or knight stories would be a much safer bet. Up to six players per room.

Vietnamese tapas

Fancy a taste of the exotic? We’ve picked for you a recently opened neighbourhood eatery where you can grab a bite of mouth-watering Asian street food: Niam Niam, run by Nicolas Desmoutier. After graduating from business school and living in Asia for six years, he studied catering at Institut Lyfe and developed a line of fantastically fresh spring rolls.
Also on the menu: fritters, kebabs, miso soup, sweet potato chips and more. Expect to spend 15 euros per person for lunch on average.

Activity-packed afternoon

Moulage de la Vénus de Milo

After lunch, discover one of Lyon’s hidden gems: the Musée des Moulages. This museum is open on Wednesdays and weekends, offering a chance to see thousands of plaster casts, replicas of sculptures, statuettes and low reliefs.

You can follow this with a visit to the nearby municipal library, the largest in the city, or Part-Dieu shopping centre, with 280 retail outlets, located opposite the train station.

Musical journey

When evening comes, head to the Auditorium-Orchestre National de Lyon, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, for a ciné-concert (film screening with live music), a recital, or a symphony concert with the music of Gustav Mahler, Anton Bruckner, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart or Franz Schubert.

If you’re feeling peckish, before or after the show, don’t miss the chance to taste the conserves, sandwiches and platters made by caterer La Fabuleuse Cantine.
