DJS, plastic artists, Chefs, musicians, artisans, choreographers... It's not just the blossoming of flowers that signals the start of spring.
Here's our selection of not-to-be-missed events over the coming months!
Three exhibitions for the spring
Lyon’s museum of contemporary art is serving up a triple dose of culture. Antoine 7de Galbert, a passionate collector (and generous donor), follows his heart rather than trends as he unearths talent. With the exhibition Désordres, he will be exhibiting 200 works at the museum, mostly for the first time, specially selected from his vast and very personal collection. A delicious mixture of poetry and humour, with a sprinkling of provocation! On the second floor, the exhibition Friends in Love and War – l’éloge des meilleur.e.s ennemi.e.s explores the theme of friendship through works taken from the collections of the museum and the British Council of Birmingham, Lyon’s partner city. Lastly, the top floor is welcoming the amazing River of no Return, a 140-metre long artwork by Sylvie Sellig, bringing
together paintings, drawings, pieces of embroidery, sculptures and other protean creations by the artist from Nice.
8 march to 7 july 2024.
Forward-looking choreographies
A highlight of the programme at Théâtre Astrée in Villeurbanne, the festival Chaos Danse will offer eleven performances, including four original creations. This event will explore brief, wandering and innovative forms, welcoming on stage the latest generation of dancers trained in the metropolitan area. For the opening, two linked evenings will put the spotlight on the work of *young graduates, with a show by the CNSMD’s youth ballet and the performance Reface by a collective of former students, Les Idoles. The programme will end with the “practical week for young dancers”, which will offer students in training an opportunity to gain experience on a
professional stage. Free for students and under-18s!
13 march to 5 april 2024.
Three of a kind
With its latest theme ‘Rebattre les cartes’ (shuffle the deck), the Lyon Opera is putting on a festival that explores three heroines through three works that question the clichés of their times and our own: Minnie in Puccini’s The Girl of the West; the Countess in Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades; and Sylvie Meyer in Otages (Hostages), an international collaboration between Sebastian Rivas and Nina Bouraoui.
The three women in turn embody the roles of adventurer, woman in the shadows and opponent of the established order. As a prelude, a free day of discovery, including public rehearsals, meetings and conferences is planned for Saturday the 9th of March.
Reservation required
15 march to 3 april 2024.
The live jungle
The electronic music festival Reperkusound is returning to the Double-Mixte, in Villeurbanne, for three days of sets by underground legends and rising stars. Among the 80 artists expected, the line-up includes Lilly Palmer and Julien Granel, a big discovery of the summer, as well as NTO and Joachim Pastor, whose techno grooves whip audiences into a frenzy. The collective Euronight Club is offering a chance to travel back to the 2000s with an immersive Eurodance space design like a “dazzling and connected jungle (…) with bioluminescent vegetation and humanoids”. Remember to bring shades... and ear plugs!
29 to 31 march 2024.
Discovering artisanship
Free to attend, the Journées Européennes des Métiers d’Art (European Days of Crafts) are held each year, in various locations around France and Europe. The aim
is to promote art and craft trades, particularly among young people. This year’s chosen theme – ‘Sur le bout des doigts’ (at your fingertips) – will involve more than
forty workshops, creative collectives and training centres throughout the département. You can learn about metalworking, jewellery-making, ceramics, basket-making, watchmaking, calligraphy and more. You may even be inspired to take up a lifelong hobby or career.
2 to 7 april 2024.
Funky gastronomy
Somewhere between SIRHA and the Lyon Street Food Festival, the Festival des Terroirs will be held at the food hall Heat for a three day feast dedicated to healthy eating. On the programme, you will find chef battles, the beef tartare championship, workshops and tastings, as well as a food court and a market with stands run by 75 producers from all over France. The event will continue on into the evening on Saturday with a DJ set! The first names to be revealed include the three-Michelin-starred chef Régis Marcon, figurehead of the event, Florent Poulard (of the restaurant Monsieur P) and the pastry chef duo known as Dorner Frères.
Entrance is free and open to all on the Saturday and Sunday.
27, 28 and 29 april 2024.
Sounds of France
For more than two decades now, the festival Changez d’Air has brought audiences into close proximity with musicians in charmingly small venues, putting the spotlight on emerging talent on the Francophone music scene, in an atmosphere that is both intimate and highly charged. This year’s line-up in Saint-Genis-les Ollières and Craponne includes Aliocha Schneider, Corine, Martin Luminet, Noé Preszow from Belgium, MPL (Ma Pauvre Lucette) and Leila Huissoud from Isère. What’s more, for this 23rd edition, audiences will be welcomed by CFA de la Gastronomie (a catering training centre), which will present a live performance on the theme of music.
22 to 25 may 2024.
